Located about four miles from the quaint hamlet of La Fortuna, Alajuela, Arenal is one of the most visited attractions in the country. Its main draw is that it has been an active volcano since the late sixties, yet there is so much more it and its surrounding area have to offer.
The area encircling the lava-spewing mountain offers landscapes as different as night and day. One part lush forest habitat and one part moonscape left barren by the constant eruption and lava flow, Arenal is truly a sight to behold. The geothermal energy from the volcano contributes to the tourism trade as well by providing heat to the 12 nearby swimmable hot springs in the Arenal/La Fortuna area.
